Family: Husband - Daniel, Son - Jacob
Career: Mother / Former Software Engineer
Attended the University of Montana for the first four years and received a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics. I met Daniel Kjelland spring quarter of my second year at college. We both moved to Redondo Beach, CA after graduation and began working for Hughes Aircraft Co. as software engineers. In July 1983 we got married and made our home Redondo Beach. For the first three years, my work at Hughes involved writing flight code for Satellite Control Systems. In 1985 I was promoted to Group Head to manage a group of 5 Software engineers. I was also responsible for coordinating the software effort of a new project. In May 1987 Jacob was born. I took a leave of absence from work to stay home and care for our son. In January 1988 Dan transferred to a new job at Lockheed. We moved to San Jose, CA, where we bought a house. Right now I am enjoying being at home with Jacob and working on home improvements.

1998
Family: I am married to Joe Bennett. We were married July 26, 1986, in Helena. We have one daughter Katyn Marie Bennett, who was born December 10, 1993.
Career: I am the third grade teacher at the Plentywood Elementary School. My husband is the middle school principal in Plentywood.
Accomplishments: I thought at first "what have I accomplished in my 20 years out of high school", but with some thought I did come up with a few accomplishments. I have gone back to school for several different courses. I started on my masters in education the summer of 93, but had to put that off because my husband had to go back and get his masters in administration (and Katyn came into our lives!) I have taught first grade, third grade, and fifth grade. I love teaching third grade the most so far. I have read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing eight times; I haven’t tired of it yet! I have read The Trumpet of the Swan six times. Directed several different class plays and puppet shows. Katyn and I love cooking in the kitchen even though my husband hates the mess we leave behind! My husband is the assistant football coach so I have attended many football games (driving many many miles sometimes.) This year they made it to the state playoffs against Frenchtown. We also attend every home basketball and volleyball game as Joe is also the athletic director. This summer we will be attending the Shrine game as Joe will be coaching the East Team with Duane Walker. Has it really been 20 years!?
Memories: I remember getting ready for the Vigilante Parade, we were doing a float on a Methodist church or something like that and Leslie Stipcich was the Minister. Leslie had to dye her blond hair black. She sprayed her hair black and she was so upset, because she thought she would never get it all washed out!
I remember running the triangle for track with Jennie Luebeck. We came up by the tennis courts and nobody was around. It was a weird feeling. Jennie later wrote a story about the mysterious disappearances. I also remember during one track season Theresa Romasko hitting a hurdle and dislocating her knee cap. Ouch Theresa!
I remember Amy Pfeifer’s birthday. We blind folded her and drove her all over town ending up at the basement of the Ice Cream Parlor. I don’t think she was too happy with us!
I remember Mindy Grove doing her Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible no Good, Very Bad Day skit for homecoming queen. Every time I read that book I think of Melinda.
I remember devouring several bags of Doritos. Sitting at McDonalds or the Ice Cream Parlor waiting for someone to get off from work. Going to the Senior Kegger with our six pack of pop.
I remember being part of a very special group of girls. Thanks for those memories you guys.

Child 1's name, age (or birth date), sex: Sarah – age 14
Child 2's name, age (or birth date), sex: Sean – age 11
What company do you work for: Student Assistance Foundation (SAF)
What is your job title: Remittance Specialist
Explain your job: I have worked in many areas of the organization, including Supervisor and Coordinator positions. After a serious health issue, I opted to be in a stress-free (part-time to boot) position.
Did you attend college (or are you attending college) and if so, what college(s) and what degree(s): Carroll College – Med/Tech and Accounting. Missoula Vo-Tech – Surgical Technology.
How and where did you meet your spouse: My group of friends met a group of guys from Helena High. Three couples married out of the group after graduation from high school. Two sets are still together. Tim and I will celebrate our 24th anniversary in August.
Favorite teacher(s): Ms. Peggy Ensign – PE and coach and Ms. Judy Gleason – PE and coach
Your Favorite High School memory(s): Lois McDaniel and I became good friends after my trick or treat episode at her house one year. My brother Jim and I moved in with the Pembroke's after our mom died (single parent) and had tried living with our dad, but it didn’t work out. Val Pembroke (yes Art’s mom) would buy one special treat for each of us kids, but wouldn’t give it to us unless we dressed up and knocked on the front door. It was quite a site to see Jim Garden in a blonde pig tail girls mask, but you do what ya gotta do. I had a full head mask which hid my “mind of it’s own” hair, I had so much fun dressing up. I decided to take my pillow case and hit the town. I ended up at Lois’s house, I got down on my knees so she’d think I was little and covered my legs. She opened the door and with much drama said how scary and good my costume was. She handed me a Reese’s candy bar (you know the full size ones) and proceeded to close the door. I yelled out that they sure were giving away great candy and could I have another piece. Lois commented that I was a “little pig” and gave me another one and again began to close the door. I stood up, she yells is that you Kathy Garden? We dressed her up and hit the town together. We had great fun.
What states/countries have you lived in: I’ve always lived in Montana. I had opportunities to travel to Europe, Caribbean, and many of the other states.
Classmates that you still "hang out" with: You know how life goes, we all went our separate ways. I would love to hear from them.
What is the most bizarre thing you did in High School (that we can publish): I participated in an invitational track meet, Lois was helping out by measuring and then shagging the shot put throws. I had just finished my throw and Lois was bent down to pick up the shot, the girl from Bozeman didn’t realize Lois was still in the throwing area and let hers fly. The shot hit Lois in the head. I became hysterical. The EMT’s wouldn’t let me go with Lois to the hospital. Wendy Rickman was trying to calm me down and yells at the EMT’s to pick Lois up by the feet and shake her because she had our money in her pocket. Lois ended up being fine suffering from a bald spot and stitches. Lois and I were able to have a good laugh after I told her what Rickman said. Thanks Wendy for your strange humor. While playing JV basketball for Ms. Ensign, we all liked to kid with her and give her a hard time. One day she had us all in a circle, she had a basketball under each arm, telling us something important (I’m sure). I reached over and did “pants-down” day. Her reaction wasn’t quick with the BB’s and all, but smiled pulled up her shorts and continued talking. A few weeks later the team was headed up to the weight room, I was doing my good deed for the day by holding the door for everyone, oh and yes I had a BBall under my other arm. Ms. Ensign de-pants me, my reaction time was not much faster than hers with my arms full and everything.
When you were a Freshman, what did you want to grow up to be: I wanted to be around animals, so a Vet. Instead I just own four dogs.
Tell us more about your children: Sarah attended Montana City School from kindergarten through 8th grade. We will be moving into Helena, so she will be attending CHS. She is tall, pretty, olive skinned – doesn’t look a bit like Tim or I (oh yeah, she’s adopted). Sarah’s adoption was finalized on her 2nd birthday. We are close to her birth family which is nice. Sarah loves to read, listen to music, and does very well with her studies. She is quite a social butterfly. Sarah plays basketball and volleyball. Sean is a great kid, he possesses the gift of gab. He even talks in his sleep. I think he will make a great politician or sports broadcaster (probably extreme sports). Sean is also adopted, his adoption was finalized on Halloween day 1992. He has high energy and wants to be in the thick of everything. He became great friends with the school principal at MCS – who wouldn’t when you spend that kind of time with someone. Sean has a big heart and is kind to everyone. He loves any type of sport. He has natural ability, but lacks the body size. When playing Small Fry football he hides behind the tackles and races around to sack the QB, but when someone is on the move with the ball, Sean hangs on to them like a lead bobber until somebody comes along to finish the job.
What have you been doing with yourself since High School (this is where you add any additional information): Since 1989, I’ve been employed at SAF. Tim and I started a plumbing business in 1983, which we still operate today. I love spending time with my kids, they sometimes get embarrassed by me, cause I (or is that girls) just want to have fun. Summers we try to spend as much time on the lake as possible. The kids bring their friends, my sister and I throw them off the boat – life is good. We’ll be 90 and still jumping off the boat. Well I hope everyone has a great time at the reunion. I and my kids will be at Lagoon and Raging Waters in SLC that weekend. Hey no pushing guys.

Aug 1999
I am living in Minneapolis, MN. I moved here New Year's Day 1990. Nothing like making a new start on the first day of a new decade. I have lived in St. Paul and Minneapolis since. (I am however, a die-hard Minneapolean - there is a serious competition between the famed Twin Cities - similar to Helena High vs Capital High).
After High School, I worked in a Helena Dr's. Office for part of a year and then joined my sister Amy in Denver for another year. Denver was fun, a great party city, but all that craziness got to me so I moved back to Helena. Eventually, I got a job in Missoula working for the State. That gave me an incredible opportunity to start college. I changed majors a bunch of times - starting with Dance and ending with Social Work/Psychology. I stayed in Missoula for a few years after graduating but found that I needed some opportunities that Missoula Montana couldn't provide (like a livable salary).
Since I moved to Minneapolis, I have had a couple of uninteresting career changes. I currently work as an Executive Assistant for the V.P. of Finance in one of Minnesota's largest private companies. (Carlson Companies, Inc. - there is some competition here too, about who exactly is the largest :-)) I bought a house 7 years ago and am still so very glad I did. I also went back to school to study Culinary Arts. Although I am not working in that field, I love to cook and (unfortunately) eat. Needless to say, I've gained a bit of weight since high school.
I've never married, have no children but have finally met the man of my dreams. (I guess for some of us, this takes a long time.) I would never have believed it 20 years ago, but my life has gotten so much better since I've turned 30. Hopefully, it will be even better when I hit 40.
