Family: Wife: Trena Ness
Career: Fire Technician III
In the fall of 1978 I attended Missoula Vo-Tech in Forestry Technology for a year. I spent 79, 80 taking it easy, went back to school in Missoula at the Forestry Vo-Tech 81, 82. I began working summers for Mt. Dept. of State Lands fighting fires in 1981. I attended University of Montana in 1983 studying Forestry, and continued fighting fires in 1981 through 1986. In 1987 I excepted a permanent position with the Mt. Dept. of State Lands as a Fire Technician III. I meet a fantastic lady in 1984 and married her, and have made Helena our home.
Jan 2005 Update
Name that we knew you as: Mike Ness
Spouses (maiden) name: Sharmie
Child 1's name, age (or birth date), sex: Wade, 16, Male
Child 2's name, age (or birth date), sex: Mikayla, 2, Female
What is your profession (i.e. Accounting, Computers, Domestic Engineer, etc): Fire, Arson and specialized investigations
What company do you work for: Investigative Tech Corp
What department do you work in: Partner in company
What is your job title: Forensics Fire Investigator, C.F.I.
Explain your job: I should have known at 9 yrs old what my destiny was when I started that grass fire behind our house in a vain attempt to impress my 9 yr old friend Julie Williams. So here I am conducting forensics fire and arson investigations in the Western States. We primarily investigate fires to determine a cause and origin for a mulitude of clientel. It is interesting to say the least.
Did you attend college (or are you attending college) and if so, what college(s) and what degree(s): I formally attended the UofM and MVTC right out of high school and that was it for a while. Since going into fire investigation, I have been attending numerous schools annually, related to my forensics work and I guess if I ever actually sat down and figured out all my credits it would add up to a masters degree in Fire Science.
How and where did you meet your spouse: I am divorced now after a 10 yr marriage. The wonderful woman I am with now, I met through work related activity and discovered we had a great deal in common. Our personalities were perfect for each other so we just had to make it happen.
Favorite teacher(s): I actually thought all my teachers were ok. No problems.
Your Favorite High School memory(s): To many and probably best not repeated here. I did live for the weekends however.
What states/countries have you lived in: I have ventured into Portland, OR and now live in Utah. And I do not miss those cold Helena winters one bit.
Classmates that you still "hang out" with: I see a few familiar faces when I make it to Helena. I worked alongside Don Thelen and his wife Chris for years. Ran into Scott Kottas at his new digs in Clancy a couple years ago. Lost a good friend and fellow classmate Scott Moore a few years back.
What is the most bizarre thing you did in High School (that we can publish): Hmmmn! Oh, by the way, Mitch Ness is not related, but people seemed to get us mixed up some times and I remember a few times taking the blame for him with mistaken identity. Thanks alot Mitch!
When you were a Freshman, what did you want to grow up to be: Wow, a lot of things. I guess I kind of had this love of wildlife and the forest and thought about drifting toward a career in Forestry.
Tell us more about your children: Wade is my best buddy, just a wonderful son. He lives with his mom in Helena for part of the year and spends his summers and school vacations with me. He goes to HHS although he would have rather been at CHS. He loves to fish and go watch our horses race at Wyoming Downs.
What are your hobbies these days: I love to fish and camp with my son. Traveling is always nice and forays to Vegas a few times a year are fun. My best friend and fiance enjoy watching our horses race every summer here in Utah and WY Downs. The beer selection here in Utah is dismal, so hobby or not, I occasionally make beer runs to Montana to get 6% Corona Extra for friends here in Utah. I was informed recently that this is illegal, so not sure how long that will continue, but hey you only live once! And if you ever make it to Utah, let me know so I can give you my liquer list to bring down.
What have you been doing with yourself since High School (this is where you add any additional information): Well, short of writing a novel here, lets just say I spent many summers working with Don Thelen, Bobb Lawrence and others fighting fires before moving on to a business partnership involving forensic fire investigations. I make it to Helena a few times a year and seek out my old haunts. I was married 10 years before divorcing and have been with my best friend for about 5 yrs now. We recently had a gorgeous baby daughter join our lives (1 1/2 yrs) and between her and my son, they keep us young at heart.

After graduation, I worked at Mountain Bell for four years and then at Norwest Bank for three. I was married to Dave Pigman on Aug 4th, 1979 and we have two children, Jenny (7) and Jake (5). My husband is a bricklayer and work became hard to find in Montana, so we sold our house and moved to Arizona in July 1987. Since that time, I've become a full time mom and housewife. Don't know how I ever managed working and kids before!
We plan on staying in Arizona for awhile, but really don't intend on it being permanent.

I still live in Helena, I'm still married to Wes and I still work for our family business. Pretty boring!!! Oh, and I still don't have any kids and too old to have them now anyway. Wes did change jobs since the last reunion. He works at the Helena Cycle Center as there salesman.
Okay so what do we do. We snowmobile, mostly Wes snowmobiles and I ski. We have property up in the mountains by Jefferson City and we go up there alot and camp. We still live at the lake so we swim and go boating. We have 4-wheelers and ride those all the time. Wes and I are both on pool leagues and he is on a horseshoe league in the summer. We do alot of community projects such as the Stampede and Kaleidoscope. I have been the chairman of the Kiddies Parade for the last 10 years also.
I have done a lot of traveling in the last 10 years. One of the places that stands out it is the Olympics in 96'. I was in the park about 4 hours before the bombing.
I have recently started going back to school at the Vo-Tech to keep up on all the lastest computer technology and will be going back again in the fall. Its funny how much I really like going to school now.

1988
Career: Secretary
After high school I went to MSU for 2 years. I wasn't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up so I quit and went to work for Blue Shield of Montana. I was there from March of '81 until May of '86. In April of '85 I took a cruise of the Caribbean and realized that there was more to the world than Helena, Montana. So the following spring - I packed up my bags and moved to California. I stayed with Theresa (Flanagan) Kjelland and her husband for approx. two weeks until I found a job and a place to live. And the past is HISTORY! I work for IT corporation aka International Technology Corporation. We are an Environmental Management Service Corp. - What that means is that whenever there is an oil spill, or hazardous waste spill, toxic waste to be cleaned up, etc - we send our crews out to clean it up. It's an interesting Company. In this day and age - we are always busy! I plan to stay in California for awhile although I miss my friends and family. There is always something to do here - I don't really care for the smog and congestion of people, but there are a few places you can get away from all that. I'm not married yet, no kids yet - I'm waiting for Tom Selleck to come to his senses! Well sorry I can't be there - I guess you'll have to carry on without me! I'm going to try and come up at Christmas. Maybe I'll see some of you then. I mean like - have a totally RAD time! I mean like for sure!
P.S. I forgot to tell you what type of work I do: I enter stock prices into the computer, exercise stockholders stock options, renew business licenses, process bond requests for our jobs and other general secretary stuff.
Nov 2003 Update
Name that we knew you as: Shari (Sharon) O'Reilly
What company do you work for: IBM
What is your job title: Project Office Administrator
Explain your job: IBM has Project Offices all over the country & the world where we are at the Customer's site. I help to manage that office and ensure that all IBM's security guidelines are being followed - and believe me..... there are ALOT of them!! There are many, many IBM Policy and Procedure Guidelines that I am constantly keeping track of......I also track the Project Office's assets, purchase products/systems for our developers, everyday office "Stuff". In other words, a glorified Admin Asst!
Did you attend college (or are you attending college) and if so, what college(s) and what degree(s): I went to MSU for 2 years, then decided to quit wasting my parent's money, because I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do..... so, I entered the working world.
Favorite teacher(s): Mr. Logan, Mr. Malee
Your Favorite High School memory(s): I really don't have one favorite, but I have many nice memories of hanging with my friends...
What states/countries have you lived in: Montana, New Mexico, California
Classmates that you still "hang out" with: None..... I've lost track of everyone. Hopefully, with this info, I will get in contact with some of them again. Mindy Grove, Amy Pfeifer, Theresa Flanagan, Theresa Romasko, Leslie Stipcich & Nancy Francis...
What is the most bizarre thing you did in High School (that we can publish): Not anything that I can think of... I was too shy in High School.
Now...... college and later in life, that is another story!!
When you were a Freshman, what did you want to grow up to be: An architect... but I soon realized that you need math for that... and I was and still am, horrible at math!
What have you been doing with yourself since High School (this is where you add any additional information): After I left college, I went to work at Blue Shield in Helena. I left after 5 years, moved to New Mexico for 3 months, then headed to California. In the 17 years I've lived in California, I've moved 15 times! No... I am not running from the law! I just got bored with each apartment and kept moving. I bought a condo in August 2001 hoping that would stop my wanderlust, but to no avail. I sold it and bought my second condo May 2002 and am thinking of moving again! I got married in March '96 and divorced in Sep 2000. It was a marriage of convenience... long story.... don't ask! I then left for Ireland to explore my roots...for a 2 week visit... and other than that, not much else has happened.

Sep 2004 Update
An article published in the Helena Independent Record on Art:
A SOLDIER'S TALE
We’ve seen hundreds of Helena soldiers leave. But we don’t always talk to them when they’re over there.
Here’s what City of Helena employee and Chief Warrant Officer Art Pembroke is up to:
9/25/2006 -
My name is CW3 (Chief Warrant Officer 3) Art Pembroke and I am currently stationed in South West Asia. I am a Montana National Guardsman from Helena, Montana. My civilian job was with the City of Helena and Lewis & Clark County as the Director of Information Technology. I am serving as a member of the Regional Computer Emergency Response Team for Southwest Asia or RCERT-SWA as it is known in theater. We are based out of Camp Doha, Kuwait but travel routinely to various sites in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan conducting assistance operations and training.
Life over here is significantly different than what I was used to before I came over. The heat took some getting used to as we have been over the 110-115 degree mark almost every day since we arrived in June. The hottest day I have endured so far was 136 degrees when we were working at a camp in Iraq called Camp Bucca. The further north into Iraq you go the more the temperatures drop, but they are still very hot (100+). We are moving into the cooler part of the year now and expect the temperatures to finally start dipping below 100. But as with all things, we have adapted to the temperatures and after the first 3 or 4 weeks you don’t notice the heat as much.
The living conditions vary from base to base. Here at Camp Doha we have pretty good conditions compared to some of the smaller field camps in the theater. I live in a 2-man pod (stacked trailers in a warehouse) that is about 8 feet by 20 feet and have a bed to sleep in. When we are out visiting sites, we stay in the tran sient quarters (tents). All of the ones we have stayed in are air conditioned so it is not too bad. You get used to whatever living arrangements are available and make the best of it. The food over here is OK. They serve you three square meals a day (four if you want to go to midnight chow) and usually there is a variety day-to-day on the menu. My observations on the chow is that the chow halls in Iraq are much better than the ones in Kuwait. I like to think that they are going the extra mile for those soldiers that are really in harms way up there. Due to security concerns, we have not really been able to get off the bases to see the cultural side of the areas we go to. They have in the past offered day trips to some of the local markets, but those have been pretty few and far between (better safe than sorry I guess).
What do I miss? My son’s the most. I am a single parent of two great boys, Tom (age 20) and Rick (age 16). The hardest part of honoring my commitment to the Guard has been not being there for my son’s during this time. My family and friends have been wonderful about seeing that they are looked after and loved, but I still miss being just Dad. The other things I miss are my friends, coworkers, church family and the beautiful scenery of Montana. I had not expected to miss the scenery around Helena as much as I do, but when you are staring out over miles and miles of barren desert (with camel heards every now and then) you can not help but long for the mountains, lakes and simple beauty of home. The scenery in Afghanistan and in Iraq around Baghdad at least has some water and trees. But nothing compares to Montana.
The thing I would like everyone to know is that each soldiers story will be different, some better, some worse. The one common link is that we all are honoring our commitment to the Montana National Guard, the United States and our fellow citizens. We really appreciate the support we receive from you. Keep the letters, email’s and photos flowing to your soldiers to let them know that they are remembered. Nothing is more heartbreaking than to see the face of someone who has not heard from home in awhile when mail call comes around.

Child 1's name, age (or birth date), sex: Hans - 8
Child 2's name, age (or birth date), sex: Anders - 5
What company do you work for: State of Montana, Department of Public Health and Human Services, Child Support Enforcement Division
What is your job title: Attorney
Explain your job: The Child Support Enforcement Program is the state's Title IV-D agency - a federal/state partnership for child support enforcement. Our agency establishes paternity, health insurance and child support orders and enforces those orders. It is NEVER boring. I provide training and advice to caseworkers; draft administrative rules and legislation; lobby; represent the Division in the administrative tribunal as well as district court and the state Supreme Court; draft many letters, motions and briefs; interpret many orders of this and other states; research the law of this and other states and countries, since we enforce support orders from all states and many countries. I left out alot but you get the idea.
Did you attend college (or are you attending college) and if so, what college(s) and what degree(s): I received a BA from the University of Montana in Economics with a minor in Philosophy. I also received a JD from the University of Montana.
How and where did you meet your spouse: Lobbying the Montana Legislature.
Favorite teacher(s): Mr. Bertlesen
Your Favorite High School memory(s): Generally, time with my friends and involvement in various clubs and yearbook staff.
What states/countries have you lived in: Maryland, District of Columbia, Vermont, Montana, Colorado, Washington
Classmates that you still "hang out" with: None. It's been a long time since I have had time to "hang out."
What is the most bizarre thing you did in High School (that we can publish): Leaving my family to move to Helena to finish high school for my Junior and Senior years. Not really bizarre, but certainly extreme
When you were a Freshman, what did you want to grow up to be: An attorney
Tell us more about your children: My 8 year old is quite an inventor of gadgets. He is always designing things, some on paper, some in our yard. My 5 year old is still at the sweet child age, but will be attending kindergarten this fall where the bathroom humor influence appears to start
What have you been doing with yourself since High School (this is where you add any additional information): School, school, rafting, alot of work, various Washington and Montana bar related organizations and volunteer efforts, marriage, children, and church activities. My husband has been on "please don't volunteer for anything else campaign" for years.

I try to stay in touch with my good friends Ed Campbell and Stacy Lavin and a few years back we even partied with Scott McTaggert out at Canyon Ferry.
